What started as simple stock car racing in 1948 has evolved into what we know today as NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) - the most popular and largest sanctioning body of motorsports in the United States. Currently, NASCAR attracts 75 million race fans each year and sanctions more than 1,500 races in 38 states.
The early years of NASCAR included races with “strictly stock” cars, but as the competition increased, modifications for both safety and performance were allowed. With the introduction of the Winston Cup Series in the 1970s, even more changes were implemented including a new points system and cash benefits to the racing.
Shell began its relationship with NASCAR in 1992 by becoming an associate sponsor of the Joe Gibbs Racing Busch Series, specifically the Winston Cup program with Dale Jarrett. Then, in 1995, Shell became one of the first sponsors of the newly formed Joe Gibbs Racing-NHRA team. With a top fuel dragster and a funny car, the team used engine oil specially formulated by Shell to help the dragster finish second and third in the championship points standings.
Recently, Shell announced a partnership with Richard Childress Racing and NASCAR Champion, Kevin Harvick. Through the sponsorship, both Shell and Pennzoil brands will be featured on the No. 29 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS to be driven by Kevin Harvick in the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup series. Shell and Pennzoil will be aggressively activating the sponsorship through Shell retail locations and auto parts stores nationwide.
